COMMENTARY ON RECENT WORKYou came into the museum's life out of nowhere and connected immediately and deeply, and you have never wavered in your commitment to it. I can never thank you enough for your heartfelt devotion to the institution, and for your artistic vision that has made it a success. Thanks again for being such a huge part of this great little institutions identity. It has been an honor and pleasure to work with you on shaping it." Today we were giving a tour of the Wheelwright Museum to a Curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and her husband, the Deputy Director at the Getty and the Director of the Santa Barbara University Museum. Naturally they liked the Coe exhibition “Good Eye and Pie,”… but they were absolutely raving about your new Center for the Study of Southwest Jewelry Galleries. They were in awe of both the Collections and the installation.” Remarkable exhibition designed by Architect and Educator Louis Gauci. It is a very original installation without real walls but rather framed veils of scrim separating the pieces. This show is one of the most dramatic I have ever seen!" It was great to meet you in person this week and to hear your exciting thoughts and insight for the exhibition. Your vision for the gallery spaces is really powerful. I am happy that the artist responded so well to your ideas. Thank you for your commitment to making the exhibition a success. I appreciate your creative vision and allowing me to learn from your process and for making such valuable contributions to this exhibition." Melanie was just here. She loves the way the show is looking." |
Over the years, the DIA built more galleries to display its expanding exhibitions collections...Lou Gauci's progressive interior modifications have garnered a number of AIA Interior Design awards."

You have helped to push us to our greatest moment! The response to the shows last night was overwhelming and very emotional. Thank you for being such a huge part of what we have done. I am confident that the new shows are going to propel the museum to unexpected heights. Feedback to the show has been extraordinarily positive and strong."
Museum Director commenting on Old Man Looking Backward and LIT exhibitions
I will have to return to bask in this beautiful installation so inspiring so captivating."
Museum visitor, commenting on LIT exhibition
LIT is presented in a reverent way that allows the viewer to commune with each work singly while also providing a cohesive sense of the relationships between the works. Most impressive is the arrangement of several life-sized figurative sculptures, each individually placed in a low-light setting that feels intimate and respectful, like entering a sanctum...
In the way this central body of work is exhibited is the fact that each warrior, while positioned in relation to the others and to the figure at the center, is arranged in the space in a way that connects it to other bodies of work as well. One doesn’t go from room to room in LIT but rather from area to area in a self-contained environment."
Art Critic review of the exhibition LIT
It is a very original installation without real walls but rather framed veils of muslin separating the pieces. At the end of last year the artist sat down with the designer, Louis Emmanuel Gauci, who lives in Knoxville, Tennessee and comes to Santa Fe to design the Wheelwright’s shows. He presented alternate sketches of his ideas of how the gallery might be set up to show her work at its best and within a day he and Rose had worked it out. The lighting, also superb, was done by a local lighting designer who worked with the exhibition designer until all was just as they wanted it. This show is one of the most dramatic I have ever seen. Of course, the artist’s works are mainly responsible but it takes the right setting to maximize their effect!"
